The English squad will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward qualification for a competition staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to stage the national team for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The English side are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they approached the site by around fifty activists, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were held up with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will feature Wales if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
The Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through the standard process.
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals held at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
“This will be a championship for the fans and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its passion and ability to bring people together.”
More than three million admissions, a record for a Euro tournament, are expected to be offered to fans.
