The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, did not confirm this decision right away after his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
